Andrzej Koszewski

Andrzej Koszewski (born July 26, 1922 in Poznan ; † February 17, 2015 ) was a Polish composer , musicologist and music teacher . He is considered Poland's most important choral composer of the 20th century. His best-known choral compositions are: Muzyka fa-re-mi-do-si (1960) , his Nicolao Copernico dedicatum (1966) , his motet Zdrowaś, królewno wyborna (1963) and his Angelus Domini, composed in 1981 for John Paul II .

biography

Koszewski sang in the Poznan Cathedral Choir since high school. After the Second World War he studied musicology and music theory from 1945 to 1950 with Adolf Chybiński at the University of Poznan and from 1948 to 1953 composition with Stefan Bolesław Poradowski at the city's State University of Music . This was followed by postgraduate studies at the Warsaw State Music Academy with Tadeusz Szeligowski .

From 1948 to 1961 Koszewski taught at the Secondary School of Music and from 1950 to 1963 at the Poznan Music School. From 1957 he taught at the city's music academy, where he became assistant professor in 1965 and full professor in 1985. As a musicologist he worked in the field of Polish music of the 19th century (especially Chopin) as well as contemporary and improvisational music. He has received several awards from the Polish Ministry of Culture and in 1982 received a Prime Minister's Prize for his work with children and young people.
