Andrzej Udalski
Andrzej Jarosław Udalski (born January 22, 1957 in Łódź ) is a Polish astrophysicist and astronomer (Time Domain Astronomy).
Udalski graduated from the University of Warsaw in 1980 and then went to the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw. In 1988 he received his PhD and was a post-doctoral student at York University in Toronto. In 1995 he completed his habilitation at the University of Warsaw and became a professor in 2000. He is the director of the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Warsaw.
In 1992 he initiated the Optical Gravitational Lensing Experiment ( OGLE ) and was thus a pioneer of astronomical observation with the microlens effect , which enables otherwise invisible objects to be observed. For example, small lumps of dark matter in the halo of the Milky Way could be excluded. The OGLE project also pioneered the transit method of searching for exoplanets . OGLE also made many other significant observations such as the first observation of the merging of a binary star system, contributions to the distance scaling in the universe, structure of the Milky Way and the galaxies of the local group, novae, quasars and characterization of various types of variable stars. OGLE is also one of the longest surveys in astronomy.
OGLE is based on the Las Campanas Observatory in Chile and Udalski was involved in setting up the Warsaw Telescope in Las Campanas (in operation in 1997). Udalski was involved not only in analyzing the data, but also in the construction of CCD cameras and other instruments and the entire telescope.
In 2017 he received the Dan David Prize and in 2018 the Tycho Brahe Prize of the European Astronomical Society. In 2002 he received the Polish Science Foundation Prize. In 2012 he became Commander of the Order of Polonia Restituta and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences of the United States. In 2018 he received the Karl Schwarzschild Medal of the Astronomical Society . In 2009 he received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).
