Andrew McArthur "Andy" Alleyne (born May 19, 1951 in Springtown, Barbados , † June 20, 2012 in Reading ) was a Barbadian football player .

Career

Alleyne was born in Barbados, which at the time was still part of the British Empire , and moved to Bath in southwest England as a child . From 1967 to 1969 he played in the youth division of Reading FC , but was then offered no professional contract and was subsequently active for the amateur club Newbury Town in the Hellenic League , while he earned his living as an employee of the General Post Office . After the dismissal of Reading's head coach Jack Mansell in October 1971, he was brought back by his interim successor Jimmy Wallbanks and initially played as a right full- back for the reserve team.

In October 1972 he was finally called up by coach Charlie Hurley for a fourth division game against league leaders FC Southport at home in Elm Park in the squad of the first team. With his commitment, he became the first black footballer to play for Reading's professional team. His competitive debut, he crowned with a hit from the center line to 1-1 final score, previously the opening goal of Southport's Andy Provan was scored from the center circle. Until the end of the season, in November 1972 he was promoted to professional, the 165 cm Alleyne, whose fan nickname was “Pocket Rocket”, remained a regular as a right full-back; after the commitment of Stewart Henderson for the 1973/74 season he was only used sporadically. A longer series of missions, this time in the left full-back position, he saw in March and April 1975 when he replaced Dave Moreline . After he was last used three times in August 1975, his contract was not renewed after the 1975/76 season , which ended for Reading with promotion to the Third Division , after 53 competitive appearances (2 goals).

He continued his career at the local club Wokingham Town in the Isthmian League , later he played in local non-league football for South Reading and Dee Road, among others.

In 2010 Alleyne was diagnosed with cancer during a stay in Barbados, which he succumbed to in June 2012 at the age of 61 in a Reading hospice . He left his wife and four children.
