Angela Jurdak Khoury

Angela Jurdak Khoury (born September 24, 1915 in Choueir near Beirut , † May 29, 2011 in Washington, DC ) was a Lebanese sociologist and diplomat.

Early life

Angela Jurdak was born in Choueir near Beirut in 1915 to Mansur Hanna Jurdak, a mathematician and astronomer at the American University of Beirut , and Leah Abs Jurdak. She attended the American Junior College for Women and graduated from the American University of Beirut with a master's degree in sociology in 1938. She later studied international relations at American University in Washington, DC and earned a PhD . As a young woman Jurdak was a member of the Lebanese national tennis team , she was a well-known long-distance swimmer and performed as a concert pianist.

Professional and political career

She was the first female teacher at the American University of Beirut in 1938 and gave lectures in sociology . During World War II , she was the assistant director of Allied Powers Radio Poll for Syria , Lebanon and Palestine .

Later became the first female diplomat for her homeland. She was sent in 1947 by the General Plenipotentiary of Lebanon to the United Nations, Charles Habib Malik, as rapporteur on the UN Commission on Women's Rights . The Commission made significant contributions to the formulation of the UN Charter of Human Rights .

In 1966 she left the diplomatic service. In 1967 she became a professor of administrative science at George Mason University in Fairfax , Virginia , where she worked until her resignation in 1982.

Honors

Angela Jurdak Khoury was awarded the " National Order of the Cedar " by the Lebanese government in 1959 . In her honor, the "Angela J. Khoury Award " is presented by George Mason University for outstanding students in the field of public administration and international politics.

Private life

Angela Jurdak married the lawyer Shukry Easa Khoury in 1949. They had two sons, Philip and George. Her husband died in 1985. During the last years of her life she lived with her sister Salma Mansur Jurdak, who was also a diplomat in Washington. Angela Jurdak Khoury died in Washington, DC in 2011 at the age of 95
