life and work

Places of birth and death are given according to the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie . Other sources indicate different locations: The General Artists' Dictionary gives Milan as the place of birth and Gorbio near Menton as the place of death . The Union List of Artist Names also gives birthplace of Milan. The TuttartPitturaSculturaPoesiaMusica confirms the AKL information. Fine Art Montparnasse only gives the year. The Musee d'Orsay confirms the information provided by Rijksbureau. According to Thieme / Becker, Asti was born in Paris and died in Gorbio near Mentone.

Nothing is known about the artistic training. He came from an Italian family, but mostly worked in Paris. Asti's work is an example of the commercialization of art. He painted hundreds of portraits of women with deep cleavages or half-naked, more rarely female nudes. ArtNet shows 100 of his pictures, Invaluable even more than 150.

Around 1877 Asti emigrated to the United States and settled in Cincinnati , Ohio , where he found a job with a lithography company . It is not known whether Asti made lithographs himself or only provided templates.

In 1890 Asti returned to Europe and settled in Paris, where he studied the works of old masters while visiting the Louvre. He was awarded a high price by the Salon de Paris . Some of his portraits of women have been transferred to various porcelain products.

At the English company Raphael Tuck & Sons Ltd. his portraits of women appeared in the form of postcards. They were also used for promotional purposes, e.g. b. used in cigarette packaging.
