Angelo Tomas Reyes (born March 17, 1945 in San Miguel , Manila , † February 8, 2011 in Quezon City ) was a Filipino general and politician .

biography

After visiting the Cubao High School he joined the Armed Forces (Armed Forces of the Philippines, AFP) as a soldier and was a graduate of the Military Academy (Philippine Military Academy, PMA), which he in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. ) completed. During his further military career, he then completed postgraduate studies in business administration at the Asian Institute of Management, which he completed in 1973 with a Masters in Business Administration (MBA). In 1991 he completed another postgraduate degree in administration at Harvard University with a Masters in Public Administration.

Within the armed forces, he rose to Chief of Staff of the AFP in 1998 and held the highest military post within the army until he was retired on March 17, 2001.

Subsequently, he was of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on 19 March 2001 the defense minister appointed (Secretary of National Defense) and also as Chairman of the Coordination Council of National Disaster (National Disaster Coordinating Council). With the appointment, the President paid tribute ultimately the attitude of Reyes during the EDSA II - Rebellion that the removal of President Joseph Estrada led and had placed at the head of the military sided with the opponents Estradas during which to Reyes.

After leaving the cabinet as Minister of Defense on August 19, 2003, he became an advisor to the President on kidnapping cases and Chairman of the National Anti-Kidnapping Task Force (NAKTF) on October 26, 2003. In addition, he was also on 10 March 2004 Adviser to the President on measures against smuggling and head of the National Anti-Smuggling Task Force.

On July 12, 2004, he returned to the Macapagal-Arroyo cabinet and became Secretary of Interior and Local Government. As part of a government reshuffle, he became Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources in 2006.

Since a further reshuffle in 2007 he was energy minister (Secretary of Energy) in the Cabinet Macapagal-Arroyo.

Reyes was married with five children.
