The trail follows the coast, with the exception of the Plas Newydd estate and the mouth of the Afon Alaw between Llanfachraeth and Llanynghenedl . The loop starts and ends in Holyhead and is described in the official guide in a counter-clockwise direction. It is almost entirely located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and follows almost entirely public footpaths as well as some approved paths with good signage. It can be done in four days, but the recommendation for the average hiker is seven to ten days.

The total cost of £ 1.4 million was partly covered by European funding . This supports the increasing demand for hiking trails along coasts. It opened on June 9, 2006.

The Anglesey Coastal Path is part of the 1,400 kilometer Wales Coast Path , which runs from Chepstow to Queensferry and opened in May 2012.
