Church Island ( Welsh Ynys Dysilio or Tysilio ) in the Menai Strait is an island off Anglesey in Wales . This island is connected to Menai Bridge by a dam, but the dam is flooded when the sea is rough. The dam, known as the Belgian Walkway , which branches off the Belgian Promenade , was built by Belgian refugees during the First World War . The tidal currents in the Menai Strait are some of the wildest in the British Isles .

The entire area of the island is taken up by St. Tysilios old church and its cemetery. St. Tysilio was a monk who is said to have lived in the 6th century and who founded a church here, but it has disappeared without a trace. A plaque above the entrance still honors this foundation today. Today's small church, still without an electrical supply, dates back to its founding around 1400. In the cemetery lie not only numerous residents of Menai Bridge but also construction workers from the bridges over Menai Street.

The grave of Albert Evans-Jones in the cemetery

The Welsh poet Albert Evans-Jones , also known by the poet name Cynan , is also buried in the cemetery.

Little Egrets first brooded in Wales on a rocky outcrop on the island in 2002.

The island is considered the best place to see the two bridges over the Menai Strait. The Anglesey Coastal Path, part of the Wales Coast Path , passes here.
