The Anglo Belgian Corporation nv (also: ABC or ABC ) is a Belgian company that diesel engines manufactures for mobile and stationary use. In addition, ABC is active in the areas of ship and locomotive drives , pump and compressor systems and cogeneration . The registered office of the joint stock company is in Ghent .

history

The company was founded on October 26, 1912 by nine investors. These included representatives from Onghena (gas engines), Carels (diesel engines) and the Britons Marcel and Richard Dory. The participation amount for each investor was 500,000 Belgian francs . The name Anglo Belgian Company at the time refers to the collaboration with British donors. In the first few years diesel engines with an output of up to 37 kW (approx. 50 PS) were built.

Germany took over the company during World War I , but returned machinery and equipment after the Compiègne armistice (1918) . As a result, ABC signed an agreement with the London-based development company Paxman Ricardo and received approval to build their engines under license. The company exported its products to Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and the Belgian Congo , a Belgian colony in Central Africa.

During the Second World War , ABC mainly produced engines for shipping (fishing and inland transport). Thanks to intensive development work, two and three cylinder engines were available at the end of the war, which were also used in farm tractors . These engines (DU series: "Diesel Universal") then served as the basis for further development. The turbocharged variants were offered under the name DUS.

In the years that followed, the DU series was developed into the DX ( naturally aspirated ) and DXS ( turbo ) series . The rated speed increased from 600 to 750 rpm. By installing a charge air cooler , it was possible to almost double the performance compared to the naturally aspirated engine (DXC series).

In the 1970s, ABC ran into economic difficulties. The most important market, the Belgian Congo , was lost due to the struggle for independence and the newly founded state of Zaire lacked the financial means. In 1973 the French engine manufacturer Societe d'Etudes de Machines Thermiques (SEMT) Pielstick (today: MAN ) took over a license for high-speed engines. In 1979 a capital increase was required. Private investors demanded the replacement of the previous management, which eventually had to file for bankruptcy . After the new management, consisting of representatives of the companies Pauwels (transformers, today: Crompton Greaves ) and Batibo (building construction and real estate) as well as the Belgian Shipbuilding Association, took over the Anglo Belgian Company and renamed it Anglo Belgian Corporation , development and production could take place to be continued. A short time later, the Belgian investment company GIMV nv joined in as part of a further capital increase.

When the market launch of the DZC engine series in the mid-1980s again led to losses, the management rejected a further capital increase and transferred the shares to Ogepar SA, a family holding company based in Luxembourg, which increased the company's capital by 75 million Belgian francs increased. Under the new management, sales doubled in the first 10 years. The DZC series made up 75% of sales at times. In 1997 the DZC engines developed up to 3700 kW (approx. 5000 hp).

The Anglo Belgian Corporation is now one of the leading providers of medium-speed diesel engines for ships, locomotives, and marine and land energy systems. The company has all approvals from the official classification societies .
