chronology
NunSexMonkRock Fearless In ecstasy

Nina Hagen's fourth studio album is fearless . It was released in Germany in 1983. In contrast to the previous album NunSexMonkRock , which was strongly avant-garde, this album is more accessible and based on synth-pop and also has hip-hop influences. Some time later, a slightly modified English version of the album called "Fearless" was released, which attracted particular attention in the USA.

Nina Hagen worked with the then very popular producer Giorgio Moroder , who produced hits for Donna Summer , Irene Cara , David Bowie , Janet Jackson and Elton John , among others . She also got to know the then unknown band Red Hot Chili Peppers with whom she wrote "Was Es ist". Many years later, when the band was already world famous, the front man of the Red Hot Chili Peppers Anthony Kiedis explained in his autobiography "Scar Tissue" that Nina had predicted that his band would one day have great success. A video was shot for the first single "New York / NY", as well as for "Was Es ist" and "Zarah".

The English version of the song New York / NY entitled New York New York reached number 9 on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart in the United States on March 17, 1984 .
