Hitchhiker's Gate

The Anhalter Tor of the Berlin customs wall was built in 1840 and razed in 1868 .

In the course of the construction of the new customs and excise wall between 1734 and 1837, the new city gates Potsdamer Tor and Hallesches Tor were built on the arteries of Friedrichstadt . Both gates were connected in a straight line on the outside and inside by a communication path.

In the middle of the 19th century, Berlin was increasingly developed by railroad lines, whose terminal stations were mostly built in front of the customs wall. After the construction of the Potsdamer Bahnhof in 1838 on the first Prussian railway from Berlin to Potsdam , the construction of the Anhalter Bahn began in 1839 . For this purpose, the Anhalter Bahnhof to be built was planned as a Berlin junction, which was to be set a little south of the Potsdam train station.

Entrance portal of the Anhalter Bahnhof as "New Anhalter Tor"

For the Anhalter Bahnhof, which went into operation on July 1, 1841, a new city gate was built in the excise wall by 1840. This was about halfway between the northern Potsdamer Tor and the southern Hallescher Tor on Communication , today's Stresemannstrasse . The square in front of the Anhalter Tor is now called Askanischer Platz , and for a long time the area was simply called “am Anhalter”. With the construction of the later representative station building, the Anhalter Bahnhof was for a long time the largest station in Europe.

Due to the rapid growth of Berlin, the Anhalter Tor did not have a long life: the wall border was lifted as early as 1860 and between 1867 and 1870 the excise wall and with it almost all gates, including the Anhalter Tor, were torn down. Instead, the monumental entrance portal of the new Anhalter Bahnhof, built between 1874 and 1880, was often referred to as the “New Anhalter Tor”, which led to the square in front of the Anhalter Tor.
