history
The library was founded in 1898 as the “Städtische Volksbücherei” and has been the “Anhaltische Landesbücherei” since 1922.
The main library, sometimes also called the “city library” , has been housed in the former Palais Waldersee at Zerbster Strasse 10 since 1962 , the scientific library since 1996 in the Palais Dietrich at Zerbster Strasse 35.
On March 6, 2012, the new Roßlauer city library “Ludwig Lipmann” was opened to the public. It is located together with the tourist information in the Kulturkaufhaus at Hauptstraße 11 and offers open-access lending, a children's library, a reading and events room as well as internet workstations and book covers on two floors. Modern and generous facilities make it one of the most modern libraries in the region. The building, which served as a department store for decades, was converted into a new cultural center for the district. In the first three months after the opening, 10,000 visitors were welcomed, the number of loans increased by 44% compared to the same period of the previous year.
Duration
The scientific library of the Anhalt State Library is the regional library of Anhalt with historical collections, such as the famous “Georgsbibliothek” with the collections of the reformer Georg III. von Anhalt as well as the theologian Georg Helt , the “ducal authority library” , as well as the “ducal court library” founded in 1820 .
The bequests of the composer and Dessau court music director Friedrich Schneider (1786–1853), the poet Wilhelm Müller (1794–1827), Friedrich von Matthisson (1761–1831) and Hermann Conradi (1862–1890), the Dessau Philanthropin and on permanent loan the estate of the writer Werner Steinberg (1913–1992) is administered.
A collection of artist books has been built up since 1992, ranging from medieval book art to modern art .
