action

Anja lives with her stepmother and her daughter Natascha in a small hut near the forest. At the end of December, the stepmother sent Anja to the forest to collect wood as punishment for feeding the hungry animals again. There she meets a soldier who helps her. As a thank you, Anja leads him to a beautiful fir tree that he should find for the tsarina. The tsarina is barely older than Anja and also an orphan. During a lesson, the tsarina got it into her head that she wanted snowdrops. Anyone who brings her a basket full of snowdrops, she wants to fill it with gold.

When the stepmother hears this, she sends Anja out in the middle of the night to look for snowdrops, even though a heavy snowstorm is raging. Shortly before freezing to death, she meets the twelve months. Despite her initial amusement at Anja's task, they help her and let snowdrops bloom for a brief moment. She is also given a ring with which she can call her new friends for help at any time.

The next morning the stepsister finds Anja sleeping in her room and steals the ring, while the mother is amazed at the flowers. The two go to the Tsarina with the basket full of snowdrops to collect the promised reward. But the tsarina really wants to know where the flowers can be found before the mother and daughter get the reward. But Anja is silent, because she has promised the twelve months not to betray them. When Anja is sent back to the forest to pick snowdrops, she is followed by her stepsister Natascha. This marks the path with colorful patches. When the tsarina threatens to throw the stolen ring into a large lake after a long march through the forest, Anja does not reveal the secret. When the ring is actually thrown, Anja calls for her friends, the twelve months, and is carried away by the wind. Within a very short time the seasons suddenly change, with everyone losing their jackets in autumn. Then when winter comes again, the stepmother and her daughter start arguing over a coat and suddenly turn into dogs. At the same time the lake disappears, and instead the tsarina and her entourage see Anja in a fine fur coat sitting in a noble carriage, surrounded by the twelve months. When the Tsarina asks her for a coat, Anja allows it, and as if by magic, the Tsarina wears a fur coat too. Anja also feels sorry for the dogs and takes care of them. Everyone drives back through the forest in a carriage.
