Anjani (real name Anjani Thomas ; born July 10, 1959 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American singer and pianist. Her style moves between folk rock , soul and jazz and is actually closest to that of a singer-songwriter , even if she does not write many pieces herself.

Anjani was still learning Hawaiian guitar, piano and singing. She attended the Berklee College of Music . She later played in jazz clubs in Manhattan . In 1984 the producer John Lissauer recruited her as a background singer for Hallelujah by the Canadian singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen . Cohen was enthusiastic about Anjani's singing, so that the same year she took part in his world tour as a singer and pianist and later on his albums I'm Your Man (1988) and The Future (1992).

In 2000 she released her first own album, Anjani . The Sacred Names followed in 2001 . In 2004 her singing on Leonard Cohen's Dear Heather was almost equal to that of the Cohen himself. In 2006 her third album, Blue Alert , was released, for which Cohen wrote the lyrics and which he produced.

In private, Cohen and Anjani were a couple.
