Ann Howard (singer)
Ann Howard , née Ann Pauline Swadling (born July 22, 1934 in Norwood , London - † March 26, 2014 ) was a British opera singer ( mezzo-soprano ).
Life
Howard played leading roles in the popular British theater genre "pantomime" as a teenager and was a member of the Covent Garden Opera choir from 1961 , where she also sang Kate Pinkerton in Madama Butterfly in 1961 . In 1964 she made her debut at Sadler's Wells Opera as Czipra in Zigeunerbaron . There and in the London Coliseum , where the opera company, later the English National Opera (ENO), moved in 1968, she subsequently sang numerous leading roles. Her portrayal of Bizet's Carmen was so successful that she was able to begin an international career in the 1970s, which also took her to North America in numerous roles such as Amneris in Aida . In later years, she shifted to character roles such as Auntie in Peter Grimes , which she sang at the New York Met , or Katisha in The Mikado . In this role, she left the ENO in 1997.
