Mary Ann Wright (* 1947 ) is a retired colonel of the United States Army , a former employee of the Foreign Service of the United States and activist in the peace movement .

Career

Wright grew up in Bentonville , Arkansas . She graduated from the University of Arkansas with a degree in jurisprudence . After that, she chose a career in the United States Armed Forces. She did her Masters in External Security at the Naval War Academy. From 1982 to 1984 she was stationed at Fort Bragg . One of her first tasks was planning reconstruction measures after the military actions in Grenada and Somalia . During this time she was already working on emergency plans as part of several war plans. One of them was the invasion of Iraq.

In 1987 she joined the United States Foreign Service, a division of the United States Department of State. In this context, she was Chief of Staff of the US embassies in Afghanistan , Sierra Leone , Micronesia , Mongolia , Uzbekistan , Kyrgyzstan , Grenada and Nicaragua .

On March 19, 2003, one day before the start of the war in Iraq , she resigned from her service in the Foreign Service and the armed forces in protest against the war in Iraq. In a letter to then Secretary of State Colin Powell , she explained her reasons. Since then, she has participated in many peace movement activities, such as the defense of Honor Watada (2006), Ship to Gaza in 2010 or the blockade of Ramstein Air Base in 2017.

Mary Ann Wright was awarded the Blue Planet Award by the ethecon Ethics & Economics Foundation in November 2018 .
