Ethecon - Foundation Ethics and Economy is an international, non-profit foundation under German law . It is a full foundation within the meaning of foundation law and was registered under the file number 3416/701-II.2. notarized by the foundation authority of the Berlin Senate. Ethecon was founded in 2004. Niklas Hoves has been managing director since 2019 . The foundation has been awarding two prizes each year since 2006. The Blue Planet Award honors people who are outstandingly committed to the preservation of the Blue Planet "in the area of conflict between ethics and economics".

At the same time, with the negative Black Planet Award, corporate board members and owners are reviled, whom the foundation accuses of a particular responsibility for the ruin of people and the environment. The foundation is critical of the group and of globalization and is financed through donations. She initiated international campaigns against Monsanto , Nestlé , Blackwater , TEPCO , and Dow Chemical and made a significant contribution to the establishment of a self-managed clinic for the treatment of children with radiation sickness in Fukushima , which started its work in 2013.

The Black Planet Award was renamed the Dead Planet Award in 2019 .

Origin and design of the prices

The symbolism of the Blue Planet and the pricing of the Blue Planet Award goes back to the Zero artist Otto Piene , who artistically supported the establishment of the foundation. After Piene's death, the photo artist Katharina Mayer took over the design of the trophy together with guest artists who change every year.

Ethecon presents the Black Planet Award together with the umbrella association of critical shareholders. The trophy of this annual humiliation award is always a globe covered with black paint to symbolize the planetary dimensions of environmental destruction. Due to its character as a shameful award, the foundation deliberately refrained from receiving an artistically or materially valuable trophy. The personal handover of the Black Planet Award usually takes place during public protests or shareholders' meetings.
