Tony Hayward (2008)

Anthony Bryan Hayward (born May 21, 1957 in Slough , United Kingdom ) is a British geologist and manager . On May 1, 2007, he succeeded John Browne, Baron Browne of Madingley as CEO of the oil and energy company BP plc . During this time, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico fell in 2010 , for which he had to declare himself before a committee of the US Congress. Hayward stepped down as CEO on October 1, 2010 . Since May 16, 2013 he has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the raw materials and mining company Glencore Xstrata .

life and career

Hayward received a first degree in geology from Aston University , Birmingham, followed by a PhD from the University of Edinburgh . He joined BP in 1982, initially working as a drilling engineering geologist in Aberdeen , advancing rapidly through a number of technical and commercial leadership roles in London , Aberdeen, France , China and Glasgow . It caught the attention of Lord Browne during a corporate executive conference in 1990 in Phoenix, Arizona . As a result, he became Browne's assistant to the board.

In 1992, Hayward moved to Colombia as Head of Research , where he became President of BP Operations in Venezuela in 1995. In August 1997 he returned to London as director of the BP research department. He became Group Vice President of BP Amoco Research and Production and, in 1999, a member of BP's Upstream Executive Committee .

Hayward was named BP Group's Chief Financial Officer in September 2000, giving him responsibility for global financial market operations, foreign exchange operations, project finance, corporate acquisitions and mergers. In April 2002 he was promoted to deputy general director and in January 2003 took over responsibility for exploration and production .

In 2009, Hayward was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Science from the University of Edinburgh .

Successor to Lord Browne

Peter Sutherland , chairman of BP's board of directors , pushed for Lord Browne's replacement amid the safety and resulting manufacturing errors in Alaska and the report of a refinery explosion in Texas City that killed 15 people and injured more than 170 , and moved the schedule from late 2008 (Browne would have been 60 and could nominally be forced to resign under BP rules) to July 2007. Hayward, who was traded internally and by media commentators as a successor, came to the Power, competitors were Bob Dudley , then CEO of TNK-BP , and John Manzoni , then head of refining and marketing at BP.

On December 18, 2006, Hayward criticized the corporate culture in a lecture at a staff meeting at the US headquarters in Westlake Park near Houston : “We have a leadership style that is too directive and doesn't listen sufficiently well. The top of the organization doesn't listen sufficiently to what the bottom is saying. ”(“ Our management style is too decisive and it listens too little to others. The top of the organization listens too little to what the base says. ”) In the same Speech warned not to get too focused on the chain of problems in the US (like the Texas City explosion, hurricanes, and pipeline problems in Alaska), the company was in great shape, and the strategy was intact and profitable. When asked if BP should ever again build an oil rig the size of the Thunder Horse platform in view of the damage caused by Hurricane Dennis , he replied: “BP makes its money by living on the edge of technology [and] by doing big things . Everyone else can do the easy stuff. ”(“ BP makes its money pushing the boundaries of technology [and] turning the big wheel. Anyone can do simple things ”) .

On January 12, 2007 it was announced that Hayward would replace Lord Browne as BP Chief Executive. In preparation for this change in leadership, Andy Inglis was named General Manager of BP's Research and Development Group on February 3.

Lord Browne unexpectedly resigned early on May 1, 2007 for personal reasons and Hayward was appointed Chief Executive Officer with immediate effect and received an annual salary of £ 998,000. In 2008 his premium was £ 1,496,000.

Negotiations with Igor Sechin

In 2008, Tony Hayward held private meetings with Igor Sechin , a senior figure in the Russian military and security agencies. BP deals with Russia were negotiated.

Oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010

On April 20, 2010, an explosion occurred on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig operated by Transocean on behalf of BP. Eleven people were killed as a result of the explosion, and around 5,000 to 100,000 barrels of oil began to pour into the Gulf of Mexico daily from the damaged pipes. Initially, Hayward and BP generally downplayed the oil stain. On May 17, 2010, they stated that the impact on the environment would most likely be small and insignificant and described the oil spill as "quite tiny compared to the ocean". On May 27th, Hayward had apparently changed his mind, calling the discharge an "environmental disaster" in an interview with CNN .

Hayward said the oil spill might endanger his job. ("We used to make a few small mistakes.") Hayward has been criticized for a variety of statements he made during the oil spill, including telling a cameraman, "Get away from here" during a photo shoot on the coast of Louisiana. On May 30th, Hayward told a reporter, "There's no one who wants this thing over more than I do, I'd like my life back." ("There's no one who wants this oil spill to end more than I do. I want my old life back,") He later apologized for what he said on BP America's Facebook page. Hayward was widely criticized for his comments and Congressman Charlie Melancon (D-La.) Called on Hayward to resign in the face of these comments. On May 31, Hayward denied claims by scientists at three universities that there were large plumes of oil in the Gulf. Hayward stated that there was "no evidence" that plumes of oil existed beneath the surface of the sea and that sighted plumes of oil, being lighter than water, would rise to the surface. A chemist from Louisiana State University agreed with this finding. Furthermore, other scientists suggested that the nature of the exclusion of the oil came from the sink and therefore the use of dispersants could have led to emulsification, with the oil floating in the water for some time.

On June 5, the Daily Telegraph reported that Hayward had sold an estimated one-third of his BP shares a month before the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded . The shares then lost 30% in value, despite the Telegraph saying "there are no indications that he acted inappropriately or knowing that the company was on the straight path to its biggest setback in history."

On July 27, 2010, BP announced the resignation of Haywards as CEO on October 1; his successor is the American Bob Dudley .

Glencore Xstrata

In April 2011 Hayward was elected to the board of directors of the raw materials company Glencore and after its merger with Xstrata in May 2013 and the dismissal of the previous chairman of the board of directors, he temporarily took over this office.

Other positions

Hayward was a member of the Citibank Advisory Board from 2000 to 2003 and an independent Supervisory Board member of the Corus Group and a member of the Supervisory Board of Tata Steel from 2002 to 2009 . Hayward became a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute in September 2005 .

Personal life

Hayward is married with two children. He lives near Sevenoaks , Kent .
