The Progressive is a since 1909 existing American political monthly magazine.

Focus

The main focus is on reports and comments on political and cultural events, people and new publications. Particular attention is paid to civil rights , the peace movement , US military and foreign policy and climate protection from a decidedly left-wing political perspective.

history

The Progressive was founded on January 9, 1909 by then Senator of the US state Wisconsin Robert M. La Follette sr. founded. In the beginning it was called La Follette's Weekly ; it was not until 1929 that the name was changed to The Progressive .

Over the decades, Progressive's editorial team campaigned against US involvement in World War II , for measures such as Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal policy , against McCarthy-era policies in the 1950s, and against the Vietnam War . In the 1960s, the magazine was an opinion leader in the nascent US civil rights movement . The written appeals and arguments of Martin Luther King Jr. had their prominent place here.

In the 1970s the focus was increasingly on ecological issues , for Earth Day 1970 the magazine headlined The Crisis of Survival.

In the 1980s one dealt among other things with the possible support of US government agencies for death squads in Central America .

During the 1990s, The Progressive campaigned for immigrants , women on welfare, equal rights for homosexuals, and human rights for inmates.

The WXXM-FM radio station in Wisconsin broadcasts a regular half-hour "Progressive Radio" magazine starring Matthew Rothschild. It is broadcast daily on FM and US-wide via Internet radio.

Columnists

Over the decades, The Progressive has had numerous left and liberal intellectuals including Jane Addams , Helen Keller , Jack London , Clarence Darrow , Upton Sinclair , Lincoln Steffens , Carl Sandburg , George Orwell , James Baldwin , Noam Chomsky , Edward Said , Nat Hentoff, and Molly Ivins offered a platform for debate .

Numerous liberal politicians such as Adlai Stevenson , James William Fulbright , George McGovern , Russell Feingold , Paul Wellstone , Dennis Kucinich and Bernie Sanders were among the authors.

Current columnists include u. a. Barbara Ehrenreich and Eduardo Galeano . The editor of The Progressive is Matthew Rothschild . The magazine is based in Madison , Wisconsin.
