Texas City is 10 miles northwest of Galveston and 37 miles southeast of Houston .
history
In the Texas City explosion on April 16, 1947 , the freighters Grandcamp ( France ) and Highflyer ( USA ) loaded with ammonium nitrate exploded in the port of Texas City . A Monsanto plant near the port was destroyed, and the chemicals that escaped as a result fueled the fires so that they could only be extinguished after two days. There were 486 dead, over 100 missing, 3,000 injured, hundreds homeless and $ 65 million in damage.

economy
The economy is characterized by heavy industry, the Texas City Industrial Complex is one of the leading petroleum processing centers in the United States. The Port of Texas City is a deep-water port that was ranked 14th of all US ports in 2008.
BP Texas City
BP Texas City is the largest oil refinery of BP . Serious industrial accidents occurred several times in the refinery, leading to a total of 23 deaths between 1974 and 2004.
In a refinery explosion on March 23, 2005, an estimated 28,700 liters of flammable hydrocarbons escaped from a containment vessel within minutes while an isomerization unit was operating , causing an explosion that killed 15 workers and injured 180. The financial damage was more than $ 1.5 billion.
