Life

Elstad was born to the farmer Johans Hestnes (1897–1980) and Jenny Roaldset (1900–1950). When she was twelve years old, her mother died and she had to take over the house. From 1959 to 1963 she attended a teacher training college in Levanger and then worked as a teacher.

Anne Kari Elstad married twice, in 1961 the teacher Bjørn Elstad and in 1981 the lecturer Birger Elde. The first relationship resulted in three children. Both marriages ended in divorce.

In 1976 she published her first novel , Folket på Innhaug , the plot of which is set in the 19th century. In 1978 she quit her job as a teacher and started working full-time as a writer. Maria, Maria , a book Elstad published in 1988, long topped the list of best-selling fiction works in Norway. In this work she wrote about her own stroke and made a connection between estrogen treatments and strokes . The publication sparked a debate about hormone treatments in Norwegian society, and Elstad has given several lectures on the subject.

In 1991 her book For dagene er onde was filmed. From 1993 she published the historical book series Julie , to which the books Julie , Som dine dager er ( German : How your days are ), Lenker (German: Fesseln ) and Fri (German: Frei ) belong.
