Anne of Green Gables is an American family film from 1934. The screenplay is based on the book Anne of Green Gables by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery . The premiere of the film was on December 21, 1934. The leading actress Dawn O'Day changed her name in the course of filming in Anne Shirley , which corresponds to the name of the title character, and kept this name as a stage name. The film initially sticks to the literature, but deviates significantly from it in the last third. In 1940 a sequel was filmed with Anne in Windy Poplars .

Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a brother and sister, want to take care of a boy from an orphanage to help them work on the farm. But the orphanage sends a girl: the red-haired, imaginative Anne. The couple decide to keep the girl. Anne becomes friends with Diana Barry and Gilbert Blythe, with whom she falls in love. Anne brags to Diana that she can wrap Gilbert around her little finger. To make Gilbert jealous, Anne claims she was in regular correspondence with one of Mr. Phillip's former students. When Anne accidentally sunk Matthews boat when they on the lake the part of the Lady of Shalott by Alfred Tennyson exercises, Gilbert saves them. The two begin a relationship that must remain a secret, as Gilbert's father ran away with the woman Matthew wanted to marry many years ago. Even after many years, Marilla is angry about it. After the relationship is discovered after three years, the two have to separate. When Gilbert saves Matthews life, the lovers are reunited.
