Anne Shirley (* 17th April 1918 in New York as Dawn Evelyn Paris ; † 4. July 1993 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

Life

Anne Shirley grew up as Dawn Evelyn Paris in poor circumstances. In order to improve the family's financial situation, the young actress took on film roles under the stage name Dawn O'Day at the age of five. Her career was relatively sluggish, but in 1934 she made her breakthrough with the film adaptation of the famous children's book by Lucy Maud Montgomery Anne on Green Gables . The film company RKO hoped to repeat the success of Four Sisters from the previous year with Anne of Green Gables . After the great financial and artistic success, the actress chose the stage name Anne Shirley.

After several rather average films, Shirley made a comeback alongside Barbara Stanwyck in 1937 in Stella Dallas under the direction of King Vidor . Although Shirley didn't get along with Vidor at all, she ended up earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress . Shirley's last film was Murder, My Sweet (1944), after which she retired from the film business when she was just 26. A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame commemorates her artistic work.

In 1937 Shirley married the actor John Payne , the marriage divorced in 1943. A daughter emerged from this connection. In 1945 she married the film producer and screenwriter Adrian Scott . The marriage lasted until 1948. Her third marriage was in 1949 with the screenwriter Charles Lederer . They had a son together. Both Shirley's daughter Julie Payne and her granddaughter Katharine Towne are actresses.
