Cláudio de Jesus Ximenes (* in Ermera / Portuguese Timor ) was President of the Tribunal de Recurso de Timor-Leste ( Court of Appeal ), East Timor's highest court , from 2003 to February 26, 2014 . He was the first judge in this office. His term of office was extended twice by the president until Ximenes submitted his resignation on February 10, which was accepted by President Taur Matan Ruak on February 26 . As President of the Court of Appeal, Ximenes was also ex officio President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary . Before he worked in East Timor, Ximenes was a judge in Portugal for 14 years and then a judge at the UN administration in East Timor .

Career

In October 2013, the opposition party FRETILIN in the national parliament of East Timor called for the removal of Ximenes after the parliament had confirmed an investigation into the suspicion of a lack of impartiality against Ximenes. The Tribunal de Recurso allowed this in August after prosecutors filed a complaint about the sentencing of former Justice Minister Lúcia Lobato to five years in prison. Ximenes was involved in deals with Lobato. He advocated a detention trial on Lobatos after her arrest on January 23, 2013, which Ximenes deemed illegal. The other two judges of the court, Guilhermino da Silva , Cid Orlando Geraldo and Deolindo dos Santos , rejected the appeal. Ximenes now submitted his resignation on the grounds that his personal interests did not conflict with his office.

Ximenes' successor was Guilhermino da Silva.

On May 19, 2012, Ximenes was awarded the Collar des Ordem de Timor-Leste .
