Maria Natércia Gusmão Pereira (born August 19, 1968 in Balibo Vila , Portuguese Timor ) is an East Timorese judge.

Career

Gusmão Pereira went to secondary school in Maliana and later received a scholarship to study law in Bali . She received training in law and Portuguese in Lisbon .

In 2000, Gusmão Pereira was appointed East Timor's first judge and worked with the foreign judges in the Special Panels for Serious Crimes (SPSC) of the Dili District Court until 2005 to investigate the human rights violations in East Timor in the context of the 1999 independence referendum . From 2007 to 2009, Pereira was interim president of the Tribunal de Recurso de Timor-Leste ( tetum Tribunal de Rekursu , German  appellate court ), East Timor's highest court, and stayed with the appellate court afterwards. As President of the Court of Appeal, she was also ex officio President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary . In 2014, Gusmão Pereira was nominated by the East Timorese government as a candidate for the International Criminal Court .

From 2015 to 2016 she was again interim president of the court of appeal. She represented President Guilhermino da Silva , who had suffered a stroke. After Silva's return to his office, however, he continued to have health problems, which is why he submitted his resignation on April 24, 2017. Pereira took over the presidency again in deputy until the appointment of Deolindo dos Santos on April 28th.

Awards

In 2012 Gusmão Pereira received the Ordem de Timor-Leste .
