The lantern- bearers (Anomalopidae), also called lantern- eye fish or flashlight fish, are a family of the order Trachichthyiformes . Flashlight fish live disjointly in different parts of tropical seas, mainly in the Indo-Pacific , Kryptophanaron alfredi in the Caribbean .

features

The different species are five to 35 centimeters long. A characteristic feature of the fish is a bean-shaped luminous organ under the eyes, which can be switched on and off by a black lid or by turning the organ downwards. The greenish light of the luminous organ is generated by symbiotic bacteria living inside the organ . It serves to attract zooplankton . The fish undertake vertical migrations and spend the night looking for food in shallower water, and on moonless nights only stay at a depth of one meter.

Fin formula : dorsal II – VI / 14–19, anal II – III / 10–13, ventral I / 5–6

The hard and soft rayed part of the dorsal fin are separated by a notch, except for the photoblepharon , which has a continuous dorsal fin.
