Ansell is an Australian manufacturer and one of the world's largest producers of protective gloves and condoms , based in Richmond , Melbourne . The company's shares have been listed on the Australian Securities Exchange since August 22, 1985 .

Company history

Company founder Eric Ansell was employed in the Australian branch of the Irish tire company Dunlop in Melbourne in 1905 . With a discarded condom-making machine from the factory, he founded the Ansell Rubber Company and started his own production. The small company grew steadily and expanded its product range to include balloons in 1919 and rubber gloves in 1925. The company was run as a family business; in addition to Eric Ansell, his sons Lloyd and Harvey and his grandson Brian determined the fate of the company and expanded abroad in the 50s and 60s. Numerous sales offices were established in Western Europe. In addition, the largest domestic competitor Nutex was taken over in 1960.

Ansell became a pioneer in disposable surgical gloves and developed new sterilization processes for their manufacture. In 1969, the takeover by Dunlop Australia (later Pacific Dunlop) followed.

In the 1970s, the company expanded into the Asian market and to meet demand, the first production facility abroad was established in Malaysia in 1975 . In the 1970s, the company's sales more than doubled to $ 28.6 million in 1979. The company continued to expand to Asia, North and South America and Europe through the acquisition of production facilities and company takeovers. The acquisition of Akwell, Alabama , made Ansell the world leader in surgical gloves and a major manufacturer of condoms. Because of the long delivery routes from Australia, the company increasingly relocated production to the newly developed markets, including the USA, Mexico, France and Germany, and completely stopped production in Australia at the end of the 80s. After further growth abroad in the 1990s, the establishment of a second company headquarters in the USA in Red Bank , New Jersey followed in 1996 .

Company data

Ansell has 30 offices in 16 countries in Asia Pacific, America and Europe. Sales in 2006 were $ 849 million, half of which was in the US and $ 313 million in Europe. The company is the world market leader in surgical and industrial gloves and number 2 in the manufacture of condoms. Ansell employs more than 11,000 people worldwide.

Products

In the industrial sector, Ansell covers the entire range of protective gloves from the automotive and metal, pharmaceutical and chemical to the agricultural and food industries. Well-known brands are HyFlex, AlphaTec and Tri-Grip. This area accounts for a good half of group sales.

The company is a leading manufacturer of sterile surgical gloves and examination gloves for hospitals, laboratories and medical practices.

Gloves in the household sector are marketed in Europe by Freudenberg KG under the brand name Vileda . Well-known condom brands are LifeStyles, Contempo, Manix, Primex, Mates, KamaSutra, Pleasure and Checkmate. At the beginning of 2007, the company also acquired the trademark rights of the insolvent German Condomi AG and Condomi Erfurt Produktionsgesellschaft mbH. This is a condom factory in Erfurt (Thuringia) with an annual capacity of up to 720 million condoms. At Ansell, condoms account for around 10% of total sales, while household gloves make up a further 7%.
