Anselm Ferrer i Bargalló , OSB , real name Josep Ferrer i Bargalló , (born April 16, 1882 in Capellades , † April 26, 1969 in Montserrat Monastery ) was a Catalan organist , composer , musicologist and monk of the Montserrat Monastery .

life and work

Anselm Ferrer joined the Escola de Montserrat in 1892 and studied singing, piano, violin and harmony with Manuel Guzmán , among others . In 1899 he entered the monastery and changed his first name Josep to the religious name Anselm . From 1907 to 1911 he deepened his musical training in Rome and Naples. In 1911 he returned to Montserrat and took over the management of Escolania de Montserrat until 1933 .

He reformed music theory and instrument studies. He attached great importance to voice training and technical knowledge of playing instruments. He played a decisive role in building an academic music library in Montserrat. The religious repertoire he adjusted the policies of Pope Pius X on.

Ferrer composed numerous religious works, including a Missa abbatialis (Abbot's Mass) for four voices and organ, three Salve Montserratina , a Te Deum , a Hallelujah , a hymn for Saint Benedict and the Lamentationes for six voices.

In 1939 he published the core of the New School of Montserrat in Barcelona .
