Anselm Schubiger , birth name Josef Alois , (born March 5, 1815 in Uznach , † March 14, 1888 in Einsiedeln ) was a Swiss Benedictine , teacher, choir conductor and composer .

Live and act

Josef Alois Schubiger was the son of Johann Balthasar Schubiger, farmer and judge, and Maria Cäcilia, geb. Strotz. He attended the Abbey School of Einsiedeln Monastery from 1829 to 1834 , entered the order - the name of the order Anselm - and was ordained a priest in 1839. In 1839 he was a teacher at the abbey school and from 1842 to 1859 also a choir conductor. From 1859 to 1863 he was pastor at the women's monastery in Glattburg near Oberbüren and from 1863 to 1873 monastery historian at the novitiate of Einsiedeln. From 1859 he devoted himself mainly to composition and music history. His musical work comprises over 130 scores . His work Die Sängerschule St. Gallen from the 8th to the 12th century (1858, new edition 1966) brought him international reputation. In the dispute about the correct way of singing Gregorian chant, he took a position against the editions published by Franz Xaver Haberl and the General Cäcilien-Verband für Deutschland , sided with the researchers of medieval chorale manuscripts and supported the association founded by Michael Hermesdorff to research old Chorale manuscripts.
