Location of Knapp in Lüdenscheid

Knapp is a central district of the district town of Lüdenscheid in the western Sauerland , North Rhine-Westphalia and belongs to the statistical district 01 ( city center / Staberg / Knapp). The area extends from Weststraße to Bahnhofstraße and from Winkhauser Straße to the centrally located Rathausplatz. The city center is located in the southwest of Knapp , and the Grünewald district adjoins it in the northeast. The Protestant Christ Church is in the north of the district.

Lighting concept

There is to be a competition for the lighting in the "think tank" quarter (around the station area). The seven locations are: the Christ Church , the facade of the Development and Start-up Center EGC (directly at the train station), the listed power house on the footpath from the police station at the train station to Martin-Niemöller-Straße, the large pendulum tower on the extension of the Phenomenta at the train station, the historic facades along Bahnhofstrasse, the “Knapper Schule” quarter square, and the subtle lighting of the path across the cemetery:

  • The illumination of the Christ Church is intended to create an identity and make the 66 meter high building appear as a landmark that can be seen from afar.
  • Thanks to its eye-catching facade, the EGC at the train station is a distinctive building that always looks different from different angles. This should also be the case in the evening.
  • On the way from the Rathausplatz to the Bahnhofsquartier is the listed power house built in 1920, which is also to be illuminated.
  • The town hall also wanted to know from lighting planners how the future Phenomenta pendulum should be staged at the train station.
  • The small facades on Bahnhofstrasse are also to be re-lit.
  • For the "Quartiersplatz Knapper Schule", the lighting is about the historic building, as well as the square area with various uses and path connections.
  • In addition, the path through the Protestant cemetery should be illuminated. It should also be safe to walk on during the “dark season”, also as a direct connection from the station district to the Wehberg residential area .

Educational institutions

Knapper school and associated sports hall

The open all-day primary school "Knapper Schule" has been located in its old building at Lessingstrasse 14 since 1886/1887. The building was built at that time because the elementary schools that previously existed in Lüdenscheid were no longer sufficient for the growing population in the west of the city. The building has also been on the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid as No. 86 since 1989 .

The parallel sports hall is used by many sports clubs as a home in addition to school sports at the Knapper Schule.

"Theodor Fliedner" daycare center

In addition, there is the Protestant day care center "Theodor Fliedner" at Nordstrasse 4. In 2011 it was expanded to take care of children under the age of three.

history

One of the historical buildings from the later Wilhelminian era is the house at Lessingstrasse 4. Above all, many style elements from the Renaissance decorate the building. The building has also been number 6 on the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid since 1984 .

The Christ Church at Knapper Strasse 56 is today the second large Protestant church in the city center alongside the Erlöserkirche and with 1,200 seats the largest church in the Märkisches Kreis and also played a central role in the development of the district. The construction of the generous, but not disproportionate in view of the demand, took place in 1900–1902. The architect was Gustav Adolf Fischer from Barmen. The building became necessary due to the strong population growth in the adjacent districts. The building has also been on the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid as No. 52 since 1986 .

Knapper Strasse, which was redesigned by the city, was inaugurated on October 3, 1986. A memorial stone in the middle Knapper Straße still reminds of the opening.

Worth seeing

The different architectural styles of the Knapp district as well as the extensive world of business and gastronomy invite you to take a walk. At the train station as well as the nearby town hall and Sternplatz you can best see the massive development of the surrounding districts. There are some newly designed playgrounds for children in the district.

The Science Center Phenomenta Lüdenscheid is located on the northern edge of the district . There are 120 interactive experiment stations that are designed to arouse visitors' interest in scientific contexts.

Cityscape

Albrechtstrasse

The Albrechtstrasse 1 building, which is part of an assembly from the beginning of the 20th century, is also of relevant monument value due to its historical architecture. As a result, the building was added to the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid as No. 111 in 1991 . This building is also privately owned today.

Think tank

By redesigning the Lüdenscheid station area into a "think tank", the district of Knapp is also to receive new impulses.

Above all, the school yard at the Knapper Schule and the adjacent Theodor-Schulte-Platz are to be massively upgraded with funding. At the beginning of July 2013 it was announced that within the next 12 months a redesigned neighborhood square would be built there, including a schoolyard extension, a forum and a stage, a slide tower and climbing frame for the children, as well as new floor coverings and an expanded parking space. The citizens were able to contribute their ideas in the course of the preliminary planning. The city has issued an overarching goal to upgrade the entire area. The project is to start with preparatory sewer work and tree felling on the school premises. According to the city administration of Lüdenscheid, both should happen during the summer holidays. The actual ground-breaking ceremony for the square project should then take place after the 2013 summer vacation. Several construction phases are planned. Restrictions for school children and residents as well as closures and construction noise are naturally also to be expected in the course of the renovation work. Regardless of this, free access for the fire brigade must be guaranteed. If the work goes according to plan, the new quarter should be ready in spring 2014.

In addition, the "think tank" project provides a support program for homeowners who want to upgrade and renovate their buildings and the surroundings of their buildings. The whole district should become more well-kept and at the same time more attractive. In order to be able to simplify communication with the citizens, the city administration of Lüdenscheid has set up an urban redevelopment office at Knapper Strasse 41.

The city of Lüdenscheid is considering whether to set up a type of urban redevelopment office for the old and upper town in the inner city in 2016 , as already exists at Knapper Strasse 41 am Knapp. At the Knapp, the urban redevelopment office would have already led to exciting results and numerous contacts.

Karlstrasse

At the beginning of Karlstrasse, the existing small green area was completely redesigned in spring 2013. There was an outdoor seating area for an adjacent restaurant. After several on-site visits and discussions, the city of Lüdenscheid concluded a contract with the operator of the restaurant in which it waived the circular seating area. In addition, the existing bed can be booked a little deeper at the point, so that there is space for several tables and chairs, which is separated by a small wall. In any case, there should be some remaining bedding area around the tree there. The restaurateur also had the requirement to structurally adapt the pavement.

Narrow street

In the district you can find houses from different building periods today. The district is largely characterized by multi-family houses. There are many shops on the lower floors of the houses, especially in the central Knapper Straße.

A central construction project in the district was the redesign of a house at Knapper Strasse 34, which previously had a supermarket and electronics store. This was gradually converted into a health center with several health-related shops and medical practices. After further shops had moved out of the building by December 31, 2012, construction work for an expansion of the health center could be continued from January 2, 2013. The construction work on the health and specialist center has now been completed. There is a sufficiently large parking lot for visitors and patients, which is approached from Kleine Herder Strasse. From here, too, patients can get to the doctor's offices and shops without steps.

Across the street at Knapper Strasse 59, a health insurance company had its large regional head office built there a few decades ago. In addition to the health insurance administration, the building also contains other shops on the lower floor.

Due to the departure of many shops, there have been massive vacancies in the district's business premises in recent years. However, it has meanwhile succeeded in getting new industries excited about the business premises in the district. In addition to many pharmacies, health-related shops and medical practices, there are now a large number of other shops and restaurants.

The building at Knapper Strasse 46 is a historically interesting building. In 1905 it was built by a consumer cooperative . The consumer cooperatives had made it their goal to be able to offer their members - mostly employees or workers - inexpensive goods of all kinds by buying larger items at lower prices and thus being able to pass them on to their members more cheaply than normal. The building has also been on the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid as No. 105 since 1990 . Today the building is privately owned.

Another interesting monument is the 2.55 m high sculpture "Great Guardian", cast from bronze , which has stood on Knapper Strasse since 1960. In the vernacular of Lüdenscheid, the bronze statue was often given the name "archer" because of the figure it represented. Today the sculpture is owned by the Federal Republic of Germany and also belongs to the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid as No. 156 .

Lessingstrasse

Another listed building is opposite the "Knapper Schule" at Lessingstrasse 15. It has also been number 94 on the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid for several years .

The narrow building at Lessingstrasse 3 is also worth mentioning. Like the other monuments, this building is also number 116 on the list of architectural monuments in Lüdenscheid .

Park theater

In the far north-west of the Knapp district, at Parkstrasse 19, is the complex of Parkbad and Park Theater on front Parkstrasse, which was built for the Belgian armed forces in the early 1950s . For a few years now, the building has housed a cinema center with seven screens. In the former theater foyer of the cinema, the splendid furnishings from the time of construction have largely been preserved.

Self-help center

After almost 20 years in the old rooms, the Lüdenscheid self-help center has moved from the Logenhaus in Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße in the city center to its new location at Friedrichstraße 30 / 30a in the Knapp district. The move took place in April 2013. In total, the new rooms cover an area of 230 square meters. In addition to a 130 square meter group room, there is also a smaller group room of around 20 square meters. There is also a kitchenette, a barrier-free toilet and offices that house the administration of the self-help center.

The access to the rooms has also been converted to make it suitable for the disabled. In addition, the furniture is to be renewed. Up to 40 representatives in the working group of self-help groups meet there regularly. There are a total of 150 groups in the entire Märkisches Kreis under the umbrella of the Paritätischen . The network is getting bigger and bigger, according to the chairman of the center. According to the chairman of the center's development association, this is a very nice development.

Skate hall on Jahnplatz

Across from the Parktheater is the skate hall on Jahnplatz, which is operated by the Skate-Club-Sauerland eV association.
