Ansley J. Coale

Ansley Johnson Coale (born November 14, 1917 in Baltimore , Maryland , † November 5, 2002 in Newtown , Pennsylvania ) was an American demographer . His contribution are essential theoretical approaches for the calculation of dynamic population models. Together with Paul Demeny , he introduced model mortality tables in the mid-1960s , which made it possible to calculate mortality and fertility rates despite incomplete data.

Life

Coale was initially a student at Princeton University . There he also spent his entire scientific career. From 1959 to 1975 he was director of the university's Office of Population Research. From 1967 to 1968 he was President of the Population Association of America and from 1977 to 1981 President of the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population .

He was a member of the National Academy of Sciences , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1970), the American Philosophical Society (1963) and, since 1984, a corresponding member of the British Academy . He has been awarded honorary doctorates by the following universities: Université catholique de Louvain (1979), University of Liège (1983), University of Pennsylvania (1983) and Princeton University (1994).

Ansley J. Coale succumbed to heart failure at the age of 84 after suffering from Parkinson's disease for several years .
