The Anta da Herdade das Cabeças (also called Anta das Cabeças 1 ) is an unusual example of an Anta- type megalithic complex . It is located north of Évora in the Évora district in the Alto Alentejo province in Portugal . Anta is the Portuguese name for around 5000 megalithic structures or dolmens , which were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the cardial or imprint culture .

Floor plan "wide chamber" Anta

In contrast to the usual structure of this type of dolmen with a passage, the transition between the high chamber and the passage is unclear here. The initially narrow and low corridor quickly widens in the shape of a funnel and rises, thus forming a large antechamber, which is completely unusual for systems of this type and only allows access to the actual chamber, a so-called wide chamber, on the right side. The remainder is blocked by a pillar and a thin plate leaning against the pillar. This configuration is only repeated for the "Vale de Rodrigo 3" system. The only capstone of the chamber is supported by the broad front stone, several bearing stones and on the antechamber side in the middle by the pillar. The complex, deprived of a few stones, still consists of more than 16 partially split bearing stones and a total of seven (almost complete) cap stones.

During the excavation in the 1940s by Georg Leisner , it was found that the monument had been looted during Roman times .
