Antanas Janauskas

Antanas Janauskas (born June 20, 1937 in Panevėžys , † February 23, 2016 ) was a Lithuanian animator and film director .

Life

After graduating from the Telšiai School of Applied Arts in 1965 , he began working at Lietuvos kino studija . He was interested in animation, but Lietuvos kino studija was not producing any cartoons at the time. In 1967 Janauskas began his first animated film Mergaitė ir velnias , which, however, remained unfinished.

His four-minute animated film Iniciatyva was the first (full) animated film to be made at Lietuvos kino studija in 1970. This film, a parable about totalitarianism , was made because of the events of the Prague Spring . In 1986 his film Antspaudas was released , which Janauskas had made with Mosfilm . While he previously worked largely unprofessionally, he has been filming with professional methods since Antspaudas .

In 1991, after the independence of Lithuania, he founded the animation studio AJ . Since then, his films have increasingly been shown at international film festivals.
