Anthony Mendleson

Anthony Mendleson (born February 7, 1915 in Chisick , London , † September 5, 1996 ) was a British costume designer .

Life

Anthony Mendleson studied art in France and Italy in the 1930s . Back in England he began his artistic career as a painter and set designer at the theater.

He started his film career in 1947 with the film Escape from Scotland Yard as a cloakroom attendant. His first time as a costume designer was in the film Another Shore (1948) in 1948, at that time without being named in the credits. His first mention was in 1949 with the film Blockade in London (1949). During his almost forty-year career, he was nominated twice for an Oscar : at the 1973 Academy Awards for The Young Lion (1972) and at the 1977 Academy Awards for The Incredible Sarah (1976).

He won the BAFTA Award four times : 1970 for Oh! What a Lovely War and 1972 for the films Alice in Wonderland , The Young Lion and Macbeth . He was also nominated in 1965 for Viking Raid and The Yellow Rolls-Royce .

He died on September 5, 1996 in London.
