content

Wolf Hauser is a German exchange student who intends to study at the University of Cambridge . When he gets there, he not only insults his future dean , Professor Murdock, but also clashes with his dorm neighbor Hugo Foster. He quickly discovered that his knowledge of British manners showed gaps. Fortunately for Wolf, Hugo's companion, the attractive student Ann, offers to help him get started in Cambridge.

Hugo soon turns out to be the president of a student association called the UHUs . Its statutes stipulate that the members undertake to complete three tasks during the semester. The first of these - right at the beginning - is that a first-year student is to be “sacrificed” in public during the university festival. Since Wolf bursts into the meeting of the club by chance, he is unceremoniously - without his knowledge - chosen as a victim. He's having fun and more and is slowly making contact. Nevertheless, he remains an outsider and now decides to devote himself entirely to studying mathematics in the second semester . When his dean encourages him to expand his personality, while Ann asks him to remain himself, Wolf realizes with confusion that he still has a lot to learn. He feels more and more drawn to Ann, who certainly reciprocates his feelings.

Of course Wolf wants to do the May ball with her at the end of the semester, but now his hour has come when the UHUs have to do their third and last task. According to this, members are prohibited from having contact with women until midnight on the last day of the semester. Since this is also the day of the May Ball , they ask Wolf for help: He should invite all of their partners to the ball and keep them busy there until the UHUs are released from their oath at midnight. The appointments in advance as well as the ball itself keep Wolf on his toes, since the girls are not allowed to know about each other, but Ann is already suspicious. Despite certain difficulties, the plan works in the end: the UHUs can happily embrace their partners and Wolf explain his secrecy to Ann.

criticism

“Anecdotal narrative film from the student milieu of the late 1950s; largely enjoyable, even if without any serious background. "
