Eric Barker

Eric Leslie Barker (born February 12, 1912 in Thornton Heath , Surrey , † June 1, 1990 in Faversham , Kent ) was a British actor .

Life

Barker had his first film role at the age of four, and five more films followed by 1919. He was later under contract as a comedian at London's Windmill Theater . There he met the actress Pearl Hackney , with whom he was married from 1936 until his death. During the Second World War he worked for the Royal Navy as a spokesperson for the entertainment program Merry Go Round , on whose book he contributed. His wife also participated in the program. After the end of the war, they successfully continued the program under a new name.

He switched to television in the 1950s and had his own comedy show called The Eric Barker Half-Hour . His wife also took part in this show, which was produced between 1951 and 1953. Although he had made his acting debut 40 years earlier, he received the British Film Academy Award for Best Newcomer in 1958 for his role in the feature film Brothers in Law .

In the 1960s, Barker had numerous feature film roles, mostly in comedies . He was involved in four films in the carry-on… film series , as well as in Is Yes Crazy - Our Torpedo Comes Back , which is not officially included in the series. Along with Kenneth Williams and Kenneth Connor , he is one of the only actors who starred in both the first (1958) and the last film in the series (1978).

His daughter Petronella, born in 1945, was also an actress and was married to Anthony Hopkins between 1967 and 1972 . From this marriage Abigail Hopkins emerged, also an actress.
