SimplyMEPIS ( M anagerial, E ducational and P ersonal I nformation S ystems) is a Linux distribution based on Debian GNU / Linux . The distribution was developed independently by Warren Woodford (from Morgantown , West Virginia , USA ) from November 2002, as he was dissatisfied with the various Linux distributions. Woodford's goal is to develop a distribution that does what the user wants. In his opinion, Linux distributions such as SuSE , Red Hat or Mandriva are too difficult to understand and use for simple users without IT knowledge. The name is said to be named after Memphis , Tennessee , USA, the residents pronounce their city similar to Mepis.

Details

The distribution is a live CD that can be tried out without installation, but installation on the hard drive is also expressly supported. The Linux distribution has automatic hardware detection and configuration, as well as the possibility of the sizes of NTFS - partitions to change. Other features include the ACPI -Stromsparmodus, the WiFi support, anti-aliasing TrueType - Fonts and a firewall . The widely used KDE serves as the graphical user interface .

Further developments

The distribution was originally developed under the name MEPIS , which today only bears the developing company. At the beginning of 2004 MEPIS was split into two versions, SimplyMEPIS and ProMEPIS . The main distribution has since been renamed SimplyMEPIS . In addition, a commercial version called ProMEPIS for companies and developers is planned, but has not yet appeared. A commercial version specially developed for Germany under the name SphinxOS , which appeared for the first time at the end of 2004, was discontinued in mid-2005 due to excessive competition - especially from Ubuntu . A group of volunteers then began to continue the distribution as a community project, but this plan also ultimately failed. The background was trademark problems, as the rights to the SphinxOS brand and, for example, the installer and the distribution system center were and still are with third parties.

Version 6.5 is technically based on Ubuntu in order to benefit from its further developments. In June 2007, however, MEPIS main developer Warren Woodford announced that he would use Debian GNU / Linux again in the future because his expectations of Ubuntu had not been met. In particular, old Ubuntu versions only fix bugs but don't add newer software. After several delays, SimplyMEPIS 7.0 was released on December 23, 2007. It contains some new features, including newer packages like Kernel 2.6.22.14 or OpenOffice.org 2.3.

Shortly after the MEPIS tools were released under an Apache license, they were further improved by members of the globally active MEPIS community for the release of version 8.0. SimplyMEPIS 8.0 is based on Debian GNU / Linux 5.0 (“Lenny”) and contains the Linux kernel 2.6.27-18. The large number of updated software packages include KDE 3.5.10, OpenOffice.org 3.0 and Firefox 3.0.6.

In addition to the "official" MEPIS package sources, the MEPIS community maintains its own package sources that contain current program updates and additional software packages.

All Mepis packages of version 8 are compatible with Debian Lenny and can also be installed on a computer with Debian Lenny.

While SimplyMEPIS CD images are available for free download, MEPIS encourages satisfied users to purchase paid access to premium servers, which is the company's only source of income.

MEPIS antiX

Since the release of SimplyMEPIS version 6.5, MEPIS antiX has been a slim derivative for older computers with 64 MB RAM or more . MEPIS antiX is supported by the community and is available free of charge. As a window manager is Fluxbox used. The current version antiX-19.2.1 " Hannie Schaft " was released on March 28, 2020.

MX Linux

A community version in cooperation with the antiX team and the former MEPIS community, Xfce is used as window manager . The current version MX-19.2 "Patito feo" was published on May 31, 2020.
