Antoine Meyer
Antoine Meyer (born May 31, 1801 in Luxembourg , † April 29, 1857 in Liège ) was a Luxembourg mathematician and author . He is considered to be the founder of an independent Luxembourg literature.
Life
Meyer was born the son of a shoemaker in Luxembourg. During his time at high school, he already had contacts with the local Polyhymnia literature group run by the German teacher Heinrich Stammer. From 1819 he studied mathematics in Liège and also took courses at the Sorbonne (Paris) and the Collège de France (Paris) in 1825/1826 . From 1828 to 1830 he attended the military academy in Breda, Belgium, and in 1832 did his doctorate in mathematics in Liège . He worked as a university professor in Brussels and again in Liège until his death.

Meyer participated from Belgium on the question of whether a relatively new and small nation state like Luxembourg needs its own national language, with his E 'Schrek ob de' Lezeburger Parnassu from 1829. The text was deliberately based on Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's German Parnassu . Since Luxembourgish was only a vernacular, Meyer first had to define a grammar and spelling. The first edition was followed by a second one in 1845, which contained further fables and texts. In 1854 a set of rules for the Luxembourgish language was published. Meyer is therefore considered to be the first author in Luxembourgish and a pioneer of independent Luxembourg literature. His main work, however, was a mathematical one: Exposé élémentaire sur la théorie des intégrales définies from 1851 appeared in French and is still available today.
