Marie Antoinette Woodville (born September 25, 1827 as Theresa Marie Antoinette Schnitzler in Düsseldorf , † May 9, 1881 in Bonn ) was a German painter.

Life

Antoinette "Toni" Schnitzler was a daughter of the builder Anton Schnitzler , owner of a building business, city councilor and church councilor of St. Lambertus in Düsseldorf, and his wife Maria Constantia, née Hoffbauer (1808-1886), born in "Petropol" (alternative name of St. Petersburg ).

Toni Schnitzler received her artistic training - among others with Louise von Martens (1828–1897) and Auguste von Schulte - as a student of Carl Ferdinand Sohn's studio . Here she met the married American painter Richard Caton Woodville , who also studied privately with her son. In 1849 she portrayed him in a 16th century costume. Woodville's wife returned to the United States with their two children around 1850. Woodville traveled to Paris with Toni Schnitzler in 1851 . The occasion was the commission of the American "International Art-Union", on behalf of the company Goupil, Vibert and Company, to several artists, besides Woodville also William Sidney Mount and George Caleb Bingham , to present their work in Paris at the William Schaus ( 1821–1892) managed branch to have lithographed. The couple went to London via Düsseldorf . In early 1853, their daughter Alice Elizabeth Mary was born, but it was not until February 28, 1854 that the couple married in London. On January 7, 1856, the son Richard Caton († 1926 in London) was born. Woodville died in the summer of 1855. The widow first went with her children to her mother's home in St. Petersburg and in 1859 returned to Düsseldorf. In 1876 - after two judgments made in 1875 - the properties owned by Anton Schnitzler's heirs, including "the widow Richard Woodville, Antoinette née Schnitzler, without a business", were offered for sale to the public.

In the "permanent art exhibition" of the Eduard Schulte art dealer in Düsseldorf, the artist regularly exhibited genre pictures and portraits under the name Antoinette Woodville from 1861 to 1866, including "The Curious" (1861), "Child Portrait" (1861), "Female Portrait" ( 1863), and a study (1862). In 1864 she was also mentioned as an exhibitor in the Cologne Art Association. A "study head, (...) delicately felt and painted with discretion" was offered in 1863 in the Berlin art dealer Sachse. In 1864 Schulte in Düsseldorf produced drawings and watercolors by “Miss. Maria Schnitzler ”.
