In the 1993 regional elections, Sánchez Presedo ran as the top candidate of the PSdeG, but suffered a significant defeat. As a result, he gave up his post as general secretary of the regional association in 1994 and temporarily withdrew from politics. Instead, he worked as a lawyer and completed a master's degree in European law at the Carlos III University in Madrid from 1994 to 1996 . From 2001 to 2004 he worked as a professor at the University of A Coruña .

In the 2004 European elections , Sánchez Presedo ran again for the PSOE and won a seat in the European Parliament .
