Opononi is a settlement in the Far North District in the Northland region ofthe North Island of New Zealand .
geography
The settlement is located around 64 km northwest of Dargaville and around 39 km west-southwest of Kaikohe on the south bank of the Hokianga Harbor, which flows into the Tasman Sea . The New Zealand State Highway 12 runs through the settlement and connects the neighboring settlement of Omapere in a short way. To the southeast, Dargaville can be reached via the Highway .
population
In the 2013 census, Opononi and Omapere counted 414 inhabitants, 13.2% less than in the 2006 census. The proportion of the population in Omapere was 40.6% or 168 inhabitants.
Education
With the Opononi Area School, the settlement has a composite school with grades 7 to 15. In 2016, 119 students attended the school.
event
In the summer of 1955/56 Opononi became known nationwide when a playful dolphin came into the natural harbor and children could play with him on the beach in front of Opononi . Before the animal that was given the name Opo could be protected by law, it died under mysterious circumstances in the bay.
