Anton Figl (politician)

Anton Figl (born January 20, 1895 in Vienna ; † January 13, 1963 there ) was a social democratic politician ( SPÖ ).

Life

Anton Figl, who came from a working-class family, kept his head above water financially as a young man with odd jobs. He initially worked as a roofer , from 1925 as a conductor and finally as a driver for the city ​​tram .

At the age of 17, Figl joined Naturefriends in 1912 , became involved in the trade union in 1913 and joined the Social Democratic Workers' Party (SDAP) in 1918 . Figl was later an active member of the Republican Protection Association of Austrian Social Democracy. When he was arrested in January 1934 for distributing leaflets, Figl was dismissed from his tram service.

Immediately after the war, Figl was elected by the SPÖ to be the district chairman of the Vienna district of Hietzing . Before Austria was "annexed" to Germany, the later northern neighboring district of Penzing belonged to the 13th district, Hietzing. When it was decided after 1945 to maintain the division into two districts made by the Nazi administration , Figl was elected district head of the new 14th district, Penzing, on April 16, 1946. He stayed that way until June 30, 1962.

He was buried in the Baumgartner Friedhof (group L4, number 10). Since 1971, the municipal housing development at Hütteldorfer Strasse 170 and 174–176, Hernstorferstrasse 22–32, Heinrich-Collin-Strasse 17–25 and Gusenleithnergasse 27–35 with 381 apartments, built 1956–1958, has been called Anton-Figl-Hof .
