Anton Hafferl

Anton Hafferl (born March 26, 1886 in Vienna , † May 5, 1959 in Graz , Styria ) was an Austrian anatomist and university professor .

Life

Hafferl received his doctorate in Vienna in 1912 and qualified as a professor in 1921 (also in Vienna) in anatomy. From 1912 until his appointment to Graz at the 1st Anatomical Institute in Vienna, Hafferl was one of the most important representatives of the Vienna School of Anatomy. His scientific work includes a. Works from the comparative anatomy (e.g. arterial system of vertebrates , anatomy of the monkey foot), but also his well-known standard textbook of topographical anatomy , which appeared in 1953 and was later revised by his successor Walter Thiel .

Hafferl was full professor at the Anatomical Institute of the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz from 1933 to 1959 (with interruptions) . During this time he took over the office of dean of the medical faculty several times, for example in 1937/38 and 1938 to 1945, most recently in 1952.

After the " Anschluss of Austria ", he joined the NSDAP in 1938 and became a shop steward for the National Socialist Lecturer Association . Hafferl was friends with the Gauleiter Siegfried Uiberreither and with the SS-Sturmbannführer Bernward Josef Gottlieb , head of the SS-Doctors Academy Graz, and was provided with bodies of Gestapo victims for the anatomical examinations . From April 24 to June 11, 1945, Hafferl was rector of the Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz.

In 1946 Hafferl was temporarily imprisoned because of his political stress. In December 1948 he was confirmed in his office as full professor of anatomy. In 1957 Hafferl retired. He is buried in the St. Leonhard Cemetery in Graz .
