Anton Sminck van Pitloo , also Antonie Sminck Pitloo , (born April 21 or May 8, 1790 in Arnhem , † June 22, 1837 in Naples ) was a Dutch artist who worked mainly in Naples. He mainly painted views of Roman and Neapolitan landscapes with rich staffage.

Life

Van Pitloo was a student of HJ van Amerom. In 1808 he went to Paris on a scholarship from King Louis Bonaparte , where he studied with Jean Joseph Xavier Bidauld and Jean-Victor Bertin . In 1810, after the fall of Bonaparte, he went to Rome and finally in 1815 to Naples at the invitation of Grigory Vladimirovich Orlov . Around 1820 Pitloo opened a private painting school there in his house, which became the focal point for young talents in the city. In 1824 he became a teacher of landscape painting at the Institute for Fine Arts. The Posillipo School emerged from his chair and the private school . Giacinto Gigante was one of his students. He carried out chromatic and atmospheric research, which was reflected in the following works.
