Antonino Zecchini

Antonino Zecchini (born December 7, 1864 in Viseo , Italy , † March 17, 1935 in Riga , Latvia ) was a Jesuit , titular archbishop and apostolic nuncio .

Life

Antonino Zecchini entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See after his ordination on June 25, 1893 . On April 10, 1921, he was appointed Apostolic Visitator for Estonia . A year later, on October 20, 1922, he was appointed titular Archbishop of Myra in connection with his appointment as Apostolic Delegate for Lithuania , Latvia and Estonia on October 25, 1922. He was ordained a bishop on December 21, 1922.

With the establishment of the Apostolic Administration for Estonia on November 1, 1924, Antonino Zecchini was entrusted in addition to his job as a diplomat with that of the local ordinary in Estonia, although he kept his official seat in Riga. After the church relations in Lithuania had been reorganized and a concordat between the Holy See and the Republic of Latvia had been signed, Antonino Zecchini was appointed Internuntius in Latvia on April 14, 1926 .

On May 13, 1931, Antonino Zecchini asked Pope Pius XI. to be released from the office of Apostolic Administrator for Estonia; His successor was the pastor of Tallinn (Reval) , Father Eduard Profittlich SJ . Until his death on March 17, 1935 in Riga, he remained nuncio in Latvia and apostolic delegate for Estonia. His funeral in Riga, which was attended by more than 100,000 people, is still considered the largest and most impressive state act that has ever taken place in Latvia. His tomb has been preserved to this day.
