Antonio Labriola
Antonio Labriola (born July 2, 1843 in Cassino , † February 12, 1904 in Rome ) was professor of theoretical philosophy at the University of Rome. He is considered one of the first and most influential Italian Marxists . His works and ideas shaped philosophers such as Antonio Gramsci , Giovanni Gentile and Benedetto Croce , among others .
Life
Labriola was born in Cassino , the son of a teacher . During his studies at the University of Naples he was particularly influenced by Bertrando Spaventa . During this time he immediately dealt with the philosophy of Hegel and Herbart . Initially close to the political right, he adopted Marx's theory around 1890 and exchanged informative letters with Engels and Kautsky . Antonio Labriola taught philosophy at the University of Rome until his death in 1904.
theory
Labriola resolutely rejected Hegel's dialectical-idealistic conception of history. He considered three factors to be decisive for the socio-theoretical view of history:
- the relations of production
- the prevailing social order (state, law)
- the cultural social formation (art, science)
After studying Marx's works, he recognized historical materialism as the objective explanation for the historical dynamics of class struggles . However, Labriola did not see Marxism as a finished work, but as a tool to understand human relationships. Post-Labriola Marxism should not be dogmatic, but flexible and adaptable. This, as he calls it, "philosophy of practice" recurs in Gramsci's prison notebooks .
