Antonio Lizana (* 1986 in San Fernando ) is a Spanish musician ( vocals , alto and soprano saxophone ) of flamenco nuevo .

Live and act

Lizana got into music at the age of eight after his father played him a recording of Deep Purple . He received classical music training at the conservatory in his native city. As a prog rock fan who grew up in the heartland of flamenco , he began to accompany flamenco acts at the age of 14. Through guitarist friends he learned the licks of Paco de Lucía and Tomatito , which he translated onto the saxophone. Then he moved to the Basque Country to study jazz techniques in San Sebastián at the Centro Superior de Música del País Vasco until 2011 , although the tradition of jazz initially did not interest him. During his studies, however, he fell in love with jazz and found his own voice (also in the literal sense).

Lizana released his debut album De Viento as a singer and saxophonist in 2012 , which was followed by three more albums under his own name by 2020; on his most recent album Una realidad differente he sings not about the traditional themes of flamenco, but about the other reality that concerns people today; Becca Stevens can be heard there as a guest.

In 2013 Arturo O'Farrill invited him to New York to perform as a soloist with the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra of Miguel Blancos arrangement of Satie's Gnossienne No. 3 for the Grammy- winning album The Offense of the Drum ; Blanco had previously presented him with two Gnossiennes on the album Satierismos (2011) by the Afrodisian Orchestra from Barcelona. He also worked with the bassist Pablo Martín Caminero , the flamenco singer José Mercé , the drummer Guillermo McGill , the percussionist Shayan Fathi , the guitarist Raimundo Amador , Alfredo Rodríguez , the Big Band de Andalucía , the Big Band de Las Palmas (under the direction of Francisco Blanco “Latino”), but also with Miguel Ríos . He can also be heard on albums by Noa Lur and Alejandro Sanz .
