Giovanni Antonio Maria Turati (* 1603 or 1604 in Milan ; † May 28, 1650 there ) was an Italian composer and conductor .

Life

Antonio Maria Turati came from a wealthy patrician family who gave him musical training in the Milan Cathedral Chapel at an early age. Between 1616 and 1629 he was a singer in the cathedral chapel. The Augustinian canon and philosopher Filippo Picinelli (1604–1678) reported an appearance by the boy soprano Turati at wedding celebrations at the Turin court. After his ordination, Turati held a position as organist at the Milanese church of San Pietro in Gessate until 1630 , during which time he remained associated with the cathedral chapel under Ignazio Donati . Among other things, he was mentioned as a shelf player in multi-choir performances. After 1630 Turati succeeded Giovanni Paolo Cima at the church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro as organist . In 1641 Tarati won a competition for the position of Kapellmeister at the Milan Cathedral, to the detriment of his predecessor Giovanni Battista Crivelli . He took up the position on January 9, 1642. One of his students was Agostino Guerrieri , who a year after Turati's death had the Primi Fiori del Giardino musicale del Sig.r Antonio Maria Turati Maestro di Capella del Duomo di Milano , a collection of works by his teacher, published.

Turati composed numerous liturgical vocal music of high quality and some church and chamber sonatas, which formally come close to the later emerging form with independent movements.
