Giovanni Battista Crivelli
Giovanni Battista Crivelli (* around 1590 in Scandiano ; † March 1652 in Modena ) was an Italian composer , organist and conductor .
Life
Giovanni Battista Crivelli probably received his training in the cathedral of Reggio nell'Emilia , where he was appointed organist in 1614 with a three-year contract. In October 1617 this contract was extended for another three years with the same salary. From 1620 he was Kapellmeister at the Chiesa dello Spirito Santo in Ferrara . From 1629 to 1634 he worked at the court of Elector Maximilian I in Munich . In 1638 he became Kapellmeister at the Milan Cathedral . He quit this position four years later because of the excessive obligations associated with it.
In January 1642 he became Kapellmeister at the Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore in Bergamo . Under his leadership, the chapel of S. Maggiore was one of the innovative chapels of its time, thanks in part to the work of predecessors such as Tarquinio Merula and Alessandro Grandi . Nonetheless, Crivelli was dismissed from this position on charges of inactivity and argument with the musicians. In 1651, as the successor to the late Francesco Sacrati , he took over the direction of the court orchestra of Duke Francesco I d'Este of Modena.
