Antonio Nicaso

Antonio Nicaso (* 1964 in Caulonia ) is an Italian writer, university lecturer, speaker, advisor to government and law enforcement agencies in Italy and abroad, international expert on organized crime . Antonio Nicaso is an expert on the Calabrian criminal syndicate " 'Ndrangheta ".

Nicaso published about 30 books, including the 1995 work "Global Mafia" on international criminal communities. He sits on the Advisory Board of the Nathanson Center on Transnational Human Rights, Crime and Security at York University (Toronto); on the international advisory board of the Italian Institute for Strategic Studies “ Niccolo Machiavelli ” in Rome and on the expert advisory board on intimidation, extortion and gang violence in Montreal. He is also President of the Centro Scuola e Cultura, a program that offers Italian courses and courses abroad in Italy.

Career

Antonio Nicaso began his career as a journalist for the press and television, writing about local criminal Italian phenomena such as Ndrangheta , Cosa Nostra and Camorra . He later expanded his field of expertise and published international criminal organizations in English and Italian.

Nicaso lives and works in North America. He teaches courses on “Social History of Organized Crime in Canada” and “Mafia Culture and the Power of Symbols, Rituals and Myths” at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada . He also teaches at St. Jerome's University in Waterloo and the Italian School of Middlebury College in Oakland, California, and is the co-director of research in the Forensic Semiotics Unit at Victoria College, University of Toronto .

With over 30 published works, many of which have been translated into other languages, Nicaso is recognized as a leading authority on various aspects of international criminal organizations. One of his most recent publications is Made men: Mafia Culture and the Power of Symbols, Rituals, and Myth (2013), in which Nicaso tries to dispel the myth propagated by the media, in which the mafiosi are seen as people of honor and fearlessness. To do this, he analyzes the language use, behavioral norms and rules of those who participate in organized crime. Another of his books, Business or Blood: Mafia Boss Vito Rizzuto's Last War (2015), was featured in a series called Bad Blood in which Anthony LaPaglia played Vito Rizzuto, Paul Sorvino as Nicolo Rizzuto, and Kim Coates as Declan Gardiner has been. The series was released in the fall of 2017.
